Raphael is one of my favorite vampire heroes. He can kill with a single thought. He's ruthless in his punishments. His back story weighs down the heart. And his blood lust adds potency to his already sexual brawn. All the attributes we love about vampires amass into this self-contained Lord of lords. But he isn't without weakness. Cyn, the heroine who stands at his side, couldn't be a better fit. My favorite thing about her is her display of guns. In this 5.5 novella in the Vampires in America series, Raphael dismisses Cyn as a confidant to execute a strategic maneuver that would risk his life. The title is appropriate as this story tests the trust between Raphael and Cyn. It also introduces Lucas, the MC in book 6. DB's writing is masterful and her acumen of tactical terminology and gear is the best in the genre. I highly recommend this series, but it should be read in order.
