Rape was an overarching theme between the main characters, however, this was told more than it was shown. Jacqueline had a few almost rape moments, but **SPOILER ALERT**after the first two attempts, I decided the writer would never actually inflict this particular torture on her. Unfortunately, this means that any further rape attempts lose their tension. But the characters kept me riveted, especially Lucas–despite the fact that his pierced-lip-tattooed-bad-boy stereotype was at odds with his inconceivably nice persona. I might’ve gushed over this story a little more if Webber had given us some time in Lucas’ head…ie written it in deep third person to include Lucas’ POV and lengthen the novel.
