Book 1 in the Chocolate Lovers series is a hoot, to be sure, but there's not a whole lot beyond the hooting (or the hooters). The first three chapters, the first 9%, is inward monologue, which reads like a non-fiction autobiography or prologue. I almost put it down in the third chapter. But chapter four, the story actually starts, with actual in-scene settings and action and dialogue. Whew! Trouble is, it's a new POV, but I don't figure that out until a few pages into that chapter. Since the entire novel jumps between first person viewpoints, it's difficult at times to determine whose head you're in. I skimmed a lot of the internal--albeit humorous--babbling. The musings are profuse and a constant detour from the plot. I wanted to snap my fingers at the author and scream, "Focus." Still, despite the technical writing problems, I've never laughed so hard. The one-liners and narrative attitude are entertaining, but way over the top. If you're looking for stand-up comedy, you'll love this book. If you want a memorable romance and witty story with conflict and missions and motivations (ahem...plot), this isn't it. I'll read the sequel, but I'm going to have to take a breather with some emotion-stirring stories before I come back to this series.
