The Opportunist (Love Me With Lies, #1) - Tarryn Fisher This first book in the Love Me With Lies series could have been an all-female psychological thriller, but Olivia's obsession with Caleb and his strange reciprocation pushes the story into romance-land. Though, I would NOT call this a romance. Caleb had all the familiar attributes of a romantic hero. The hunky jock. The parade of female admirers. He could have anyone, but he wanted psycho girl Olivia. Psycho girl didn't want him. Until he moved on. Then her fanatic stalking ensued. It's like Fatal Attraction, narrated through the viewpoint of this crazy, self-absorbed, villainous girl. I can't decide if Caleb ended up with the right girl. Both women were mentally disturbed, which added a biting little nipple wrench to the drama. The climax was a long time coming, and you can't help wishing it ended differently. But how different? Giving the main character what she spent the entire book manipulating people to get would not equate to a desirable conclusion. A story told from the villain's viewpoint is kind of dehumanizing. It defeats a book's impulse toward enjoyment. But... Despite how disgusting Olivia is, there are moments when you can relate to her because she IS human. And it's in these moments, during her state of inner turmoil, when you're the most hopeful that she'll change. Though it's not enough for her to change. She has to consciously choose the right path and acknowledge her change, no matter how painful it is. Especially if it's painful. This is how you redeem a villain, and Ms Fisher pulled it off beautifully. The turning point was absolutely brilliant and oh-so memorable! The only reason I didn't give this five stars was the nonlinear story telling. The flashbacks ebbed the flow of the present day tension.
