Sweet mother, this so impressively blew away my starry-eyed expectations, I was left nursing my worn out emotions into the wee hours of dawn. The moral of the story: Trust and secretiveness are incompatible. I'm sick over poor, effed-up, misunderstood Gideon. His mysterious behavior turned my stomach into knots. I wanted Eva to strangle him with his tie, only to turn the page and find myself willing her to fall to her knees and pledge her eternal love. Like most heroines in this genre, Eva is intense, defiant, and courageous. But more than that, she's formidable in her brilliant plotting and commitment to resolution (a glorious relief from the usual lovesick uncommunicative MC who can't puzzle out her emotions without pages of drama). Eva grabs hold of every fraying component of her life and pours her heart and intellect into knitting it all back together. I felt winded in my awe as I attempted to keep up with her, even as I wondered: Can two broken people so inexplicably in love ever be made happy by it? There are just enough answers revealed to comfort the aching heart, but there is still so much left to discover in this story. The wait for the conclusion will be excruciating.
